A compassionate RN consultation to help your family understand a serious illness and prepare for what’s ahead.
Serious illness raises questions that appointments rarely have time to answer. Andreen Robinson, MSN, RN meets with your family, by appointment, to help you understand what is happening and prepare for conversations with the care team. This is a consultation and education service, not hospice or disease management.
Families navigating a complex or serious illness
- Patients managing a complex, chronic, or life-limiting illness
- Families seeking clarity about what to expect
- Patients and families preparing for conversations with the care team about goals or next steps
- Caregivers seeking guidance on daily care and when to seek additional support
What this is
- Explaining medical information and treatment plans in plain language
- Helping families understand what caregiving at home may involve
- Preparing specific questions for physician or specialist appointments
- Clarifying which situations warrant a provider call, urgent care, or emergency care
What you’ll leave with
A clearer understanding of the situation, a prepared list of questions for the treating team, and support thinking through next steps.
Situations this program helps with
A family whose father was told his cancer is no longer responding to treatment. They left the oncology appointment with more questions than they arrived with and a follow-up six weeks away.
A woman caring for her husband with advanced heart failure. She doesn’t know what to expect as things change, or when a change means she should call the cardiologist instead of waiting.
An adult daughter trying to understand the difference between palliative care, hospice, and what her mother’s physician has recommended. She wants someone to explain it clearly, without making a decision for her.
What families ask before scheduling
Is this the same as hospice?
No. HVPN is not a hospice agency and does not enroll patients in a hospice or palliative care program. This is an RN consultation and education service, delivered alongside your treating providers.
Can you explain what the doctor said in plainer terms?
Yes. This is one of the most common reasons families reach out—a diagnosis or prognosis that came with medical language, a short appointment, and a lot of uncertainty afterward.
How many visits are typical?
Some families need a single consultation to feel less overwhelmed. Others find value in ongoing support as the situation evolves. We scope this together at the start, without a preset number.
Is this only for the patient, or for family members too?
Both. Families managing a serious illness carry significant cognitive and emotional weight. This consultation supports everyone in the room.
What if we’re not sure hospice is the right step?
We can help you understand what hospice is, what it isn’t, and what questions to bring to your physician—without steering you toward or away from any particular decision.
Does HVPN provide hands-on care during these visits?
Depending on the situation, yes—within RN scope and per your provider’s plan. Education and care coordination are always included; clinical care is added when appropriate and provider-ordered.
When another provider may be more appropriate
HVPN does not provide hospice services, palliative program enrollment, or emergency or urgent intervention, and does not replace the treating physician or hospice team. See our Terms of Use for full service scope.
