Hands-on RN coaching to help family caregivers feel prepared for the routines a provider has directed.
Caregivers are often handed wound care, ostomy, or medication routines with little preparation. Andreen Robinson, MSN, RN walks through the routine with you, by appointment, so you feel ready rather than just instructed.
Family caregivers handed a new routine after a hospitalization
- Family members caring for a loved one at home after discharge or surgery
- Caregivers who received instructions but weren’t fully taught how to carry them out
- Spouses, adult children, or other unpaid caregivers managing new care tasks
- Families who want a knowledgeable RN to answer questions before they start
What this is
- Teaching provider-directed wound care or ostomy routines step by step
- Reviewing the medication schedule and safe administration routines
- Explaining how to use prescribed equipment and organize supplies
- Clarifying which changes or symptoms warrant a call to the physician or 911
- Unhurried time for caregiver questions
What you’ll leave with
Hands-on preparation for the caregiving routine your provider directed, and a clear sense of when to call them with a question or concern.
Situations this program helps with
A daughter shown a wound dressing change by a hospital nurse for five minutes. Her mother is being discharged the next morning. She wrote down the steps but isn’t sure she can do it on her own.
A husband asked to manage his wife’s new ostomy at home. He had never seen one before the surgery. He wants someone to walk him through it in their bathroom, not in a hospital room.
An adult son managing his father’s medications remotely. His mother is the primary caregiver but is uncertain about the routine and calls him every day with questions he can’t answer from a distance.
What families ask before scheduling
Does the patient need to be present?
Yes. We meet with the patient and the caregiver together, in the home where the routine will actually happen, so the teaching is grounded in your specific setup and equipment.
What if I’m not sure I can learn to do this?
You do not need medical experience. We teach step by step, with time to practice, and we do not leave until you feel ready.
Can multiple family members attend?
Yes. Anyone helping with the routine is welcome, including remote family members who want to understand what’s involved.
What if the routine the hospital taught me seems wrong?
We review what you were taught and clarify anything that needs clarifying. If something is inconsistent with your provider’s instructions, we flag it and help you follow up.
How is this different from the discharge teaching I already received?
Hospital discharge teaching happens quickly, during a stressful time, and usually covers the minimum. This consultation is unhurried, happens in your home, and focuses on your specific situation.
Do I need provider orders for this?
Not for education and coaching visits. If your situation also includes hands-on care—such as wound dressing changes—provider orders may be required for that component.
When another provider may be more appropriate
HVPN does not provide ongoing or recurring caregiving coverage, personal care aide services, or supervised nursing care, and does not replace a licensed home care provider. See our Terms of Use for full service scope.
